Taking it Back
Recently, I completely stopped shooting for vapid social media hungry vultures. I have officially said no to it, and it feels oh so good. Now the challenge of taking my photography back really starts. Luckily, I have been blessed to be featured in a local skateboarding calendar, which raises money for charity. To me, having work that I’m truly proud of featured alongside 11 of my peers is what it means to take my work back to what I want it to be.
I have always loved skateboarding and often spent hours shooting and editing the photos I took, knowing there was nothing I could gain out of them. Yet this is where I feel most proud of my work and discovered photography is not about the money or fame but the pride you have within your photos.
The calendar in question. Filled with great skateboarding and well worth the money. Please support it here https://www.fortheaumies.com/shop/p/2026-charity-calendar
Getting this news and combining it with finally feeling no shame when I show the work being featured was the absolute lift I needed to really push myself and focus on photography again for the first time in what feels like years. I have also recently ordered the final proofs of my 5-year project, so the feeling of closing the book on that project is pushing me forward, too. I shall be going skating more and more and definitely making sure I shoot as much of the fun as I possibly can. No other reason for it than just capturing some memories. Maybe one day it’ll be a book, but for now, I think we all need to go back to just living life rather than making everything we do about a photograph or a fucking Instagram post. Anyway, here’s a few of my favourite skate photos from the past year or so.
